CtK’s Lenten Photo Challenge 2020

The year 2020 connotes vision – at least to me – so for the 2020 season of Lent CtK once again issues a Lenten Photo Challenge. There is a word for each day that is inspired by the lectionary readings – let this word inspire you to pause, reflect, and get creative. Each day, take a picture of how you perceive the day’s word – no explanation needed. Challenge yourself to take a picture every day, but you can participate as much or as little as you like. Share your pictures in any of the following ways:

  1. Send daily pictures to Mandy with the day’s word in the subject line
  2. Post daily pictures to Instagram, #ctkdurango, #[wordoftheday] (for example, #dust)
  3. Post daily pictures and word to your Facebook page and tag Christ the King Lutheran Church – Durango
  4. Post daily pictures and word to CtK’s Facebook wall (Christ the King Lutheran Church – Durango)

Invite your friends and family, those near and far, to participate in this challenge as well. Each Sunday there will be a slideshow of all the week’s photos (those sent to Mandy) in the Sanctuary and on our website.

View submissions here.

You don’t have to be a great photographer. This challenge is about paying attention and being intentional. It’s not about getting the perfect shot with the perfect light and the perfect filter (but if that’s your jam, go for it!).

Take the time each day to live into Lent, and share with our community a glimpse into your Lenten life.

Writing the Renewal Grant. . .

This week, I have been awash in words. Between the Renewal Leave Grant, two sermons, a Bible study, a newsletter article, and numerous emails, I feel like all I’ve done this week is write. Then, write some more. Then, write some more. Then… you get the idea.

But the hallmark achievement of the week has been completing the first draft of the Renewal Leave Grant. This accomplishment marks the result of many hours of work, data collection, meetings, and – you guessed it – writing. But writing was only the last step. Before then, we needed information from all of you, and you came through brilliantly. I was so impressed that we received almost 100 responses from the Renewal Leave Team’s Survey. The results from that survey really helped us to hear what it was that you, the congregation members of CtK, wanted and craved for yourselves and this community during the Renewal Leave. So, thank you!

Once we received that information, we tabulated the results and began forming a rough outline of what that Renewal Leave will look like. The results indicated that there was a lot of support and desire for more opportunities for congregational networking and fellowship and combined worship services; so that will be part of the plan. Also included will be ways to delve deep into understanding your spiritual gifts and how your gifts interface and interact with the gifts of others. A process for discovering your spiritual gifts and a follow up retreat to learn more about them will be part of your time together, too.

In the last week, then, the Renewal Leave Team has been hard at work crafting that language to be used in the actual grant. Once we have a chance to review it and edit it, we will present it to the Church Council at their meeting on March 10th. With their approval, it will be finalized and sent off to the Lilly Foundation for their consideration. We will know whether we are awarded the grant by late August. (Just a reminder: the actual Renewal Leave won’t take place until Summer 2021.)

Thanks for all of your participation and prayers. Keep ‘em coming!

Peace,

Pastor Tim

March 2020 — Council’s Corner

March 2020 — Council’s Corner

Greetings from your Church Council!

Council and congregation members are continuing to team up to accomplish some great work. Thank you to all of you who are lending your time and expertise to keep a variety of necessary projects moving forward.

Garden Suites (Formerly known as Children’s World) update:  The Garden Suites team has made good progress in the last weeks. We are in conversation with a local non-profit organization interested in leasing the Garden Suites space. For privacy reasons, we can’t name the agency at this time, but good discussions are taking place.  Part of the delay in moving forward is that our Church bylaws require congregational approval before Council can move forward to sign a lease agreement.  The lease opportunity will be further addressed at the Semi-annual Meeting on May 17th, and a vote will be held to give Council the approval to move forward with a potential lease agreement.

Renewal Team Planning:  Pastor Tim will be taking renewal leave during the Summer of 2021. Thank you to all of you for attending the planning meetings that have been held and for completing the surveys of your top choices for congregational renewal leave activities. Your input has given direction to the renewal team to complete work on the Lily Foundation grant request. For more information please check out the Renewal Leave page on our church website.

We need you! CtK will be hosting the Ecumenical Lenten worship service and soup supper on March 25th. We are asking CtK’ers to please bring soup and/or bread — so keep watch, sign-up sheets will be out soon.

Think and pray about it….The Semi annual Meeting is coming up on May 17th.  At this meeting, elections will be held for Church Council and the Endowment Fund Board.  We are seeking a few people that can serve on these two boards and get the chance to work with other wonderful congregation members already serving. If you have questions or are interested in serving, please let Pastor Tim know.

CtK Council President

Lenten Focus on World Hunger

From your persistent friends on the Social Ministry Committee:

The First Sunday in Lent falls on March 1st this year.  And as we have for several years, the Social Ministry Team would like to focus the congregation’s attention on hunger; hunger in the US, and hunger around the world.  As a visual aid to assist us with this task, the ELCA has provided us with Lenten devotional calendars designed to help us think about and understand hunger.  We hope you received one of these calendars and will use them during Lent—they were given out on Sunday, February 23rd.  If you did not receive one and would like one, please check with Linda in the Front Office.

In addition, as part of the ELCA’s campaign to raise money for ELCA World Hunger, we have set a goal of $5000 for Christ the King.  If each person in the congregation put aside 50 cents a day during Lent, we would more than fulfill this modest goal.  Please prayerfully consider this worthwhile cause.  You may put your contributions in the Noisy Offering or put a check in the offering plate with “World Hunger” on the memo line. To further help us reach our goal of $5000, the Noisy Offerings for both March and April have been designated for ELCA World Hunger.  Thank you all for your generosity and for all you do in God’s name.

Olive Oil Project

This project is an ELCA partner project that supports over 1700 small farmers represented by the Palestine Fair Trade Association.  This association empowers marginalized, Palestinian rural communities caught in conflict so they can sustain their livelihoods.  You are invited to join us on March 8th after each service when we will be doing a tasting of three types of organic olive oil that you may purchase from the land of Canaan.  If there is demand, we will take orders.  Come taste and learn more about this project.  Contact Wanda Ellingson for more information –

johnandwanda@bresnan.net or 970-385-4882.

The Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission

On Sunday, March 22nd, CtK will welcome Patterson Yazzie, the Mission Director for the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission. He will be leading a Q&A between services that day to talk about the ministries of NELM and answer any questions that you may have about the Mission. We are currently working on setting a date(s) for folks from CtK to travel to NELM to install solar light kits in people’s homes and to do some other work projects around the Mission Campus. The plan is to do this in April, but dates have not yet been confirmed. Please let me know if you would be interested in this trip by emailing me at pastortim@ctkdurango.org.
