Habitat Update

Habitat for HumanityCtK’s Build Day comes early this year Saturday, June 1st.  We will be back at Fox Farms in Bayfield working on another duplex… FRAMING — one of the really fun parts of building.  We need volunteers to work on site and to help provide lunch that day (the usual sandwiches, chips, salad, drinks, and dessert).  A signup sheet will be in the Welcome Center beginning May 11th.  So if you would like to volunteer please do so – we can certainly use your help.  For those who sign up, someone will be calling you with more details the week before the build date.

And YES!  You really are helping others!  The following is from one of the Habitat Partners (recipient of a Habitat home).

It has been an amazing experience of hard work, love, kindness, and learning. The kindness of others, the willingness to teach someone new things, is hope when a family has disparity in their life. The ability to create a new life for our children is evident in Habitat. I remember just praying and sitting there looking at that empty lot. My children were dancing on top of the foundation in the cold winter months, sitting in that little trailer with mittens on after work and school — organizing tools and getting supplies ready for the build. We did not give up even though we were in a tough place. There is a dedication in the families that commit to this endeavor. It has helped me teach my children and myself. It not only creates a home, but character, integrity, a change in self-awareness, and the love of community. Hopefully, I can receive the education to find a job where I can help people like this.

NOTE:  If you really enjoy our build day, Love Out Loud is also sponsoring a Build Day the following Saturday, June 8.  Sign up for that is separate!  ~ Rap Fairley for CtK Habitat

Start thinking about how YOU can help with this awesome outreach program. CtK keeps the cost SUPER low (just $30 for the week), plus we offer scholarships so every child who wants to can attend. We rely heavily on donations of time, money, and food from the congregation every summer – can you help?

Look for the signup poster at the Congregational Meeting on May 19th. If you’d like to donate money, write DAY CAMP DONATION in the memo line of your check.

May 2019 — CtK Youth Group News

The CtK Youth Group will end the school year with a “De-Stress Fest” on Friday, May 31st from 5-7:30 PM.  All youth 5th graders (going into 6th) through 12th graders are invited to attend.  There will be lots of fun, games, and prizes – all to help you unwind from the school year and kick off summer vacation.

See Christina if you are able to help with donations of Thrivent dollars, food, gift cards (Starbucks, WalMart, Amazon, etc.) to be used for prizes.  There were nearly 40 youth in attendance last year, so we greatly need your support and help, and we sincerely appreciate whatever you can assist with.  And please consider being a youth chaperone! We need you!

Remember to congratulate the following CtK Youth who will be confirmed on Sunday, May 19th:  Kristina Bodewes, Lana Bodewes, Evan Gonzales, and Jessica McVaugh.

Kudos to our 2019 high school graduates: John Awe (DHS) – he will be going into the Navy; Noah Bodewes (DHS) – he will be attending Colorado State University (CSU) in the Fall; and Amla Wolf (AHS) – undecided at this time.    Our best wishes to them for continued success in all their endeavors!

Summer Photo Challenge: Pics with Pastors

Summer Photo Challenge: Pics with Pastors

Summer is quickly approaching, and the warmer weather means that more people will be going on vacations, camping trips, or to family reunions. Indeed, I will be taking some time this summer to do those very same things. It is good for our bodies, minds and souls to get away at times.

However, as your pastor, let me encourage you NOT to take a vacation from God this summer. As far as it is within your power, I hope that you might keep up your worship attendance with us at CtK. This church just isn’t complete without you, so please come!

If you are out-of-town, though, I invite you to participate in a Summer Photo Challenge. Wherever you might be, visit a nearby church for worship or just to drop in and visit. You can find ELCA churches through the website www.elca.org; but you could also visit a church of a different denomination. While you’re there, take some pictures of the building. Take a picture of their Sanctuary (not during worship, please!). And, finally, ask to take a picture (a selfie!) with the Pastor!

If you’ve got the time, jot down some notes about your experience. You can use these questions to guide you:

  • What do you like about the church building / property?
  • How does the congregation welcome or interact with visitors?
  • Ask one of the members: what brought you to this congregation? What makes you stay?
  • Ask the Pastor: what ministry or ministries thrive in this congregation?

You can bring these pictures and responses to me at the church, or send them to me electronically at pastortim@ctkdurango.org. I’m eager to see all of the responses we get!

Finally, let me encourage you to sign up for the Simply Giving program that enables you to have your offering to CtK automatically withdrawn from your checking account on regular intervals. Summer is the hardest time for churches financially because people are gone and forget to make up their offerings later on. Simply Giving helps you by giving you one less thing to try to remember; and it helps the church by giving us a more predictable stream of contributions. If you have questions, see me or Beth Stelz for more information.

Peace,

Pastor Tim
