Maundy Thursday

Livestream Service Thursday, April 1st at 6pm.

Immersion Exercise

After the Worship Service, remove everything from your dining room table and push the chairs away from the table.
Listen to Psalm 22 as you do so.
Your dining room table is acting like our church altar, stripped bare. It shall remain so, until…

Good Friday

Congregation-designed Good Friday Worship, April 2.

Immersion Exercise

As you are moved to do so, place a single cross on your bare dining room table, for
Behold the life-giving cross, on which was hung the Savior of the whole world.
Oh come, let us worship him.

Easter Eve Vigil

Saturday, April 3

Begin with the Opening Prayers, at right. Use the right arrow to move to the immersive exercise, and then again to the Easter Proclamation. Once you’ve finished that section, you’ll see below it the section for the readings and their specific immersive exercises, to be completed in order as we move towards Easter. The idea is we will prepare our previously stripped-bare dinner tables for a glorious Easter dinner as we go through the Vigil readings. When you’re finished, scroll down… to Easter!

Opening Prayers

The light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

Immersive Exercise

Light a candle and place it on your dining room table, which should be bare except for the cross from Good Friday.

Easter Proclamation

Rejoice!
For God keeps God’s promises.

Immersive Exercise 1

In the beginning…

Set a dinner plate (and placemat, too, if you have it) at each place at your dinner table.

Immersive Exercise 2

The waters swelled…

Add a glass for water at each place setting. You don’t need to fill them yet, but think of the deluge when you do.

Immersive Exercise 3

…God tested Abraham…

Sometimes it’s a test to remember on which side of the plate the fork belongs. That’s your test.

Immersive Exercise 4

…stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it…

If you plan to serve wine at Easter dinner, add a wine glass (Red Sea=red wine). If not, put down another water glass, and divide the water yourself.

Fifth Reading: Isaiah 55:1-11

Salvation freely offered to all

Immersive Exercise 5

…eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

Place a napkin under each fork. Napkins save your face and dignity when you delight in rich food.

Immersive Exercise 6

“Come, eat of my bread…”

Add a bread plate at each place setting.

Immersive Exercise 7

A new heart I will give you…

Salads are new and green and lettuce has a “heart”, so add a salad plate and fork.

Immersive Exercise 8

…it was full of bones.

Knives are sort of the shape of bones, so add a knife (and butter knife if you like) to each place setting.

Ninth Reading: Zephaniah 3:14-20

The gathering of God’s people

Immersive Exercise 9

…at the time when I gather you…

Move your chairs back to the table so you’re ready to gather for dinner.

Immersive Exercise 10

…[they] threw him into the sea…

The sea is salty. Jonah is, too, for that matter. Add salt and pepper shakers to your table.

Eleventh Reading: Isaiah 61:1-4, 9-11

Clothed in the garments of salvation

Immersive Exercise 11

…as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland…

Deck out your table in beauty by adding a centerpiece: flowers, jewels, whatever is lovely for you.

Twelfth Reading: Daniel 3:1-29

Deliverance from the fiery furnace

Immersive Exercise 12

…when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, drum, and entire musical ensemble…

And finally, add the spoon, because if you have 2, it’s a musical instrument.
