Christmas is Coming!

The Social Ministry Team invites you all to participate in the “alternate giving” program through the ELCA Good Gifts, online catalog. You can choose from more than 50 gifts that will not only help people around this world, during this Covid pandemic, but honor your family and friends, in giving a lasting gift that will make a difference in the lives of God’s children whom we never met.  Go to goodgifts@elca.org and help share God’s love.

 But there is MORE!!!!!!

It’s almost here! Finally, what we have been waiting for, the Colorado Gives Day will be held on Tuesday, 12/7/21!  Remember, that if a nonprofit organization receives 10% of the total money raised on that day, that same nonprofit receives 10% of the $1 Million Incentive Fund that is powered by Community First Foundation and presented by 1st Bank.

Go to www.Coloradogives.org/cogivesday and see all the local nonprofits that we support like Durango Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Manna Soup Kitchen, Rainbow Trails, etc.

This is a wonderful way to hopefully increase our favorite nonprofit’s revenue this coming year!

 Habitat Update:

Christmas is around the corner and many of you will be decorating your home for the event.  If you are interested in some new decorations to go with your old, beloved decorations, the Habitat Restore has recently received a big shipment of Christmas decorations, donated by Macy’s. Check them out!

As always, Habitat needs donations to the restore as well as volunteers at the restore or on site to help with the construction of this year’s build.  If you have some extra time you can give to either, it would be greatly appreciated.

Community Thanksgiving News!

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is on for this year, albeit as takeout only. That means that CtK will be creating the stuffing again. We will need volunteers for chopping, cooking, and smushing, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 23rd) from 4pm – 6pm.  However, Manna is renovating the main building so we will be using their culinary kitchen which is a little smaller than the usual place. That means we probably can’t handle quite as many volunteers. If you are interested, please call John Condie at (970) 799-1851 or email him at johnandwanda@bresnan.net. As soon as our slate is full, we will have to stop taking volunteers, so call early and often.

Thank you from the SM committee!

Bread for the World Sunday

OCTOBER 17TH – Bread for the World Sunday!

We will celebrate Bread for the World Sunday on October 17th at Christ the King Lutheran Church. CtK has been a long-time partner and supporter of this Christian advocacy organization.  Bread for the World (www.bread.org) has been working to fight hunger and poverty here in the U.S. and all over the world; progress has been made in policy, partnering with local governments, non-profits and churches to get at the root of some of these issues. However, COVID-19 has had significant impact on the ability of people to put food on the table, while trying to deal with their employment, housing and all the issues impacted by COVID.

Your voice matters and needs to be heard now, and always. Go to the Bread website and see how you can personally get involved, support financially, or pray for solutions to these critical issues for our brothers and sisters across the world. In particular, there is a focus on concentrating on the first 1000 days of a child’s development and care. You can read more about that on the website.

Thanks for your prayers and support.

SOCIAL MINISTRY RALLY DAY–Come One, Come All!!

Please stop by the Social Ministry table on September 12th after the first service or after the second service to see what opportunities there may be for you to connect to serving others in our community and the world.  Also, if you are a Thrivent member, we can connect you with some ways to use your Action Team dollars.  As Pastor Tim’s sermons have reminded us, the church needs YOU and there are so many ways to do one thing to be of service and connect with our members and the community. Please prayerfully consider what M-team might be calling you to service.

YOU CAN  HELP THE LA PLATA FAMILY CENTERS COALITION–BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

Check out the website https://lpfcc.org/backtoschool/ for the Family Center’s annual Back-to-School supply drive.  They are currently collecting school supplies and there are ways to shop a list they have on the site, do a cash donation and find how to drop off the supplies.  Christ the King has participated with them for many years and it is so wonderful to have children receive their backpacks with supplies on August 14th as the new school year starts.

Thanks for your help!!
