ELCA World Hunger Lenten Challenge:
This year, as we have for 10 years, no, 15, well many years, we are raising money for ELCA World Hunger during the Lenten Season. We have set a goal of $5,000 for our congregation; it is a goal we met easily last year despite the many socio-economic setbacks of the pandemic.
Here are some facts listed on the ELCA World Hunger Website. These facts and statistics underscore the urgent need for us to reach out and help those in our world who are food insecure.
More than 820 million people – that’s about 11 percent of people in our world today – are hungry. As members of the ELCA, we are called to respond…ELCA World Hunger is uniquely positioned to reach communities in need. From health clinics to microloans, water wells to animal husbandry, community meals to advocacy, your gifts to ELCA World Hunger make it possible for the ELCA to respond, supporting sustainable solutions that get at the root causes of hunger and poverty. Hunger facts:
- 821 million people around the world – that’s more than 1 in 10 – can’t access the food they need to live active, healthy lives.
- According to the most recent estimates, 736 million people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 per day. That’s 10% of the world’s population.
- At some point in 2017 (the most recent year available), more than 40 million people in the United States were unsure where their next meal might come from.
- 39.7 million Americans were living in poverty in 2017. For a family of four, this means their annual household income was below $25,094.

Habitat Update:
Habitat for Humanity will be building a 2-story duplex back in Fox Farms in Bayfield this summer. Additional details will be announced as they become available.
In the meantime, Habitat is looking for volunteers to be on the Habitat Board, the Faith Relations Committee and to work at the Restore. The Board meets once a month for 1 ½ hours. Currently there are 6 members and Rachel, the Director, would like to have 10 – 12 members. A background in real estate, fund raising, or people skills would be an extra bonus. The Faith Relations Committee consists of members from community churches or religious organizations in the area and meets every other month and supports Habitat in its various projects. Volunteers, who help run the Restore, display merchandise, make sales, pick up donations, and a wide range of other activities. ALL volunteers are very much appreciated! Habitat does make a difference in people’s lives; there are lots of success stories and you can be a part of it. Call Rachel at Habitat to volunteer at 970-382-2215.
