“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

2012 Offering of Letters April 28th and 29th–GRAB THOSE PENS!

Update 5/7: We are off to a great start. Thanks to all who wrote their letters last weekend. If you didn’t get the Bread for the World flyer and envelopes to write your letters to our members of Congress, please stop by the table in the Welcome Center. Please bring back your completed letters before May 18th. We need your voices in our attempt to form a “circle of protection” around the programs that help out the 46 million people in the U.S. who are assisted with their basic food needs. “Have Faith, End Hunger”–as the Bread for the World motto says.
Original post 4/21: It is that time of year–when we lift up our collective voices across our country to help the poor and hungry among us. Last year, we were one of 1,269 Offering of Letters nationwide; those efforts resulted in 157,763 personal letters to our Members of Congress, plus 12,795 phone calls and thousands of e-mails. Christ the King delivered or sent 185 letters last May to the Durango offices of our Members of Congress. This was a 76% increase for CtK over our effort in 2010! Thanks for your amazing support.
This year, we will be asking that our Senators and Representative to create a circle of protection around programs vital to hungry and poor people in the United States and around the world. Bread for the World members and supporters were able to help prevent major cuts last year to vital programs, but the threats are far from gone. We will need to protect what we achieved in 2011 and defend programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and international food aid from across-the-board budget cuts this year.
On April 28th and 29th, we will pass out materials to our congregation members and ask you to write a letter to each of our folks, Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet and Rep. Scott Tipton. Wouldn’t it be great to have 250 letters from Christ the King!! Thanks for your support and we look forward to advocating for those in our world who are hungry. As the Bread logo says, “Have Faith. End Hunger.”

2012 Member Directory now available

You can now access the directory online. The site is password protected, so please email Linda for the password, or stop by the office for a hard copy.

Love Fund Appeal

Thanks for your ongoing support for the Love Fund. As you heard in our temple talks last weekend, CtK depends on the generosity and love of fellow members who may face a financial emergency. Please consider making a donation (one time or recurring) by making your check to CtK, with “Love Fund” in your memo line. Helping our CtK family members is one way we show our love to God and each other. Bless you all.

Habitat For Humanity Update

Once again Habitat will be building a duplex this summer in Bayfield. For the past 5 or 6 years (and many more before that) Christ the King has participated in a CtK Build Day. Our usual Habitat co-ordinator will only be in Durango briefly this summer and needs a replacement to organize just this year’s build. It would involve coordinating with Habitat, including picking a date, putting out a signup sheet for site workers and food (lunch) providers, and following through. It’s a worthwhile project, very rewarding and lots of helping hands. If interested, please contact Jigger Staby (259-7577).

Food Bank Donations

If you are able, buy a few extra items at the grocery store each week, and drop them off in the cart in the Welcome Center. Currently the Food Bank really needs breakfast foods like oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix, etc. Also needed are peanut butter, jelly and pasta.

If you would prefer to donate money, write “Food Bank” on the memo line of your check to Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Like Horses? Like Smiles?

Mission and Ministry Updates

Please Support the Spring Valley Slum School in Kenya

The school’s 300 students eat two meals a day there, allowing them to learn better and grow healthier. One dollar per day covers food and education for one child, and a CtK member will travel to Africa this spring to deliver 100% of the donated funds directly to the school. If you’d like to contribute, write “African Mission” on the memo line of your check, and put into the offering plate or drop it off at the church office. Contact: Christie Ilg-Salter, 259-3435. See our own Haley and the Youth from FUMC in Spring Valley.

Excellent News from Morocco

Thanks to the generosity of friends, family and CtK members, Charlie Kolb’s young friend, Aziz, had his new prosthetic arm/hand fitted on December 12th!

The background: Aziz is a young Moroccan man who lost his arm in an explosion; Charlie is a former CtK member now working for the Peace Corps in Morocco. Charlie asked if donations to help Aziz could be sent to Christ the King, as no funds can be sent to the Peace Corps for anything like this. We collected just over $3000. The cost of the prosthesis was $2980, and we sent the balance of $118 to the Southwest Center for Independence here in Durango, so that some local folks with disabilities could be helped, too.

Blessings and thanks to you all for your kindness, interest and support. We will be getting more information from Charlie and Aziz, but we wanted to thank you NOW! Jigger Staby/Social Ministry

Volunteer Help Wanted for Durango American Cancer Society

The Durango American Cancer Society is reaching out to area churches to share their need for volunteers to help out at their Cancer Resource Center, located at Mercy Regional Medical Center. Volunteers who work at the Cancer Resource Center have the wonderful opportunity to serve cancer patients with tangible support by: coordinating rides to medical appointments, arranging free lodging, giving free wigs and head coverings, providing support group information, stocking a library of information and literature as well as providing answers to concerns and questions. All volunteers are thoroughly trained prior to working at the Cancer Resource Center. Volunteers can work a regular 4-hour shift each week, or be a substitute on an “on call” basis. If you are interested, please call Gina 247-4912.
