CtK Library monthly Book Review – From December 2012 Scribe by Lillian Boe
From our CtK Library:
“The Heart and the Fist”
by Eric Greitens
NOTE: This book was chosen as an “all school read” for Fort Lewis College.
While going to college, then grad school, Eric Greitens spends his summers helping others in China, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Bolivia. His eyes are opened by the great needs of others around the world. Yet, even by helping those in need, Greitens could not prevent these peo-ple from being victims of ethnic cleansing and other violence.
Greitens is a smart, outgoing guy who is well educated — earning a degree from Duke University, and going on to earn his PhD as a Rho-des Scholar at Oxford. He has many opportunities to earn a good living with a career. However, after some reflection, he decides to turn his back on these career opportunities and instead join the U.S. Navy and become a Navy Seal.
The book covers Greitens’ training and qualifications as a Navy offi-cer through Officer Candidate School (OCS) and then as a Seal with the opportunity to be a “warrior.” Greitens gives a detailed description of Navy Seal training, including “hell week.”
Greitens was a new Seal when 9-11 occurred, and he served on secretive, anti-terrorist missions in Kenya, the Philippines, and Af-ghanistan, and was wounded by a suicide car bomber in Iraq.
Afterwards, a friend’s death in Iraq prompted Greitens to engage in his current mission—the development of a charitable organization whose goal is to help wounded veterans restart their lives.
