Navajo Christmas Angel Project

This holiday season we will be collecting items for our brothers and sisters at Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission. (NELM) This important partnership humbly serves the Navajo community of Rock Point, AZ. Every day, Navajo staff feed the hungry, prioritize Christian and cultural learning, focus on community engagement, and work towards fulfilling basic community needs. In their spiritual and social work, they strive to embody and teach the grace of Jesus and listen to the call of the gospel to serve one another in love.

Beginning December 4th, please pick up a NELM Angel in the Narthex. There is no need to wrap the item, just return it to the box in the narthex. Items will be collected until December 24. They will be delivered with the 20+ quilts made by the Piecemakers. Below is a list of items that we will be included on the NELM angels. Thank you for your generosity and spirit of giving to our NELM partnership.

  • Medical supplies
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Layette kits
  • Winter clothing

  • Pajamas for all ages

What is the Mission Endowment Fund?

The fund was designed to support Christ the King Lutheran Church in its mission.  The Fund receives unrestricted gifts and bequests from congregation members and their families, and friends of Christ the King.

This is a permanent endowment fund that is separate and distinct from the everyday operating funds of the church.  The assets are held by the ELCA Endowment Fund Trust to provide for their long-term stability and growth, so donors can be confident that their gifts will endure to continue God’s work within our congregation, the community of Durango, and the world.

How do I apply for a Mission Endowment Fund Grant?

Applications can be made at any time of the year, but the Board meets once a year, in January, to review all applications that were received prior to December 15st of the previous year.

The application form can be found on the Christ the King website at ctkdurango.org/learn-more/documents/ in a fillable .pdf format.

To submit it, you may email to mef@ctkdurango.org.

Social Ministry Thank You from “Shelter from the Storm” Event:

One of Christ the Kings community partners, the Volunteers of America, held their signature annual fundraising event, “Shelter from the Storm”, back on November 9th.  I served as one of the table captains, representing CtK and on behalf of the VOA and myself, wanted to thank each one of my table guests.  It was a triumphant return after the event had been suspended for a couple of years due to the pandemic.  From initial indications, the 2022 event was a tremendous success.

The very first non-profit organization that I became involved with when I transferred from Denver to Durango in 1998 was the VOA.  Their work with the Durango Community Shelter and Southwest Women’s Safehouse has been near and dear to me for all these many years since.

My heartfelt thanks to each of my table guests:

Phil Campbell (my dear friend and neighbor),

Jigger Staby and her sister, Kathie Adkins (Kathie and I actually served together on the VOA board many years ago), Beth Stelz, Barbara and Paul Wirsching, Robert Maple, Carol Orlowski, Louise Clark, Donn Wince and Kathy Boike.

Lastly, I’d like to thank Christ the King!  One of the greatest blessings of my life is to be part of a church that continually displays incredible generosity and support for our beloved Durango community.

Peace & Love,

David Smith

We will make stuffing again this year!

So the holiday season is starting!  While the Community Thanksgiving Dinner is now, regrettably, a thing of the past, Manna Soup Kitchen has taken over the task.  CtK will fulfill its usual commitment to the community on Thanksgiving by assembling the stuffing, so please put the annual Stuffing for the 400 Party on your calendar on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (which my calendar says is the 22nd of November).  We will meet at Manna Soup Kitchen to chop vegetables, cook the sausage, tear the bread and smoosh together the ingredients for our now legendary stuffing.  If you have any questions, you may call Jeff Saville @ (928) 699-5779 or ask John Condie, who can often be found loitering in the welcome center by the donuts before and after the 9:30 service.

The Noisy Offering Recipient for November is Housing Solutions for the Southwest – thank you CtK!!

OCTOBER NOISY OFFERING RECIPIENT—BREAD FOR THE WORLD
This month we will lift up a long-term partner with Christ the King, Bread for the World. This Christian advocacy organization was founded by a Lutheran pastor and works with U.S. federal decision makers to address systemic issues around hunger and poverty. This work has made a huge difference around the world and in the United States in the last almost 50 years.
Yet, one in ten people goes to bed hungry every night. One in four children under the age of five is severely malnourished.
Good progress was being made until the significant impacts of COVID on people around the world and in our own community. So the work continues and every voice matters. Check out www.bread.org and add your voice to the chorus of all who hear God’s call to care for all of God’s people.

CELEBRATE OUR MISSION PARTNER: Iglesia Luterana Agustina de Guatemala (ILAG)

Guatemala weekend is almost here!

Rev. Karen Castillo and her son, Diego Gil, will be joining us for 10/8-10! Rev. Karen is the head of the Lutheran Church in Guatemala and provides leadership and ministry to the congregations across the country, including our partner church in Zacaleu.

On Sunday, 10/8, Rev. Karen and Diego will be joining us for worship and Pastor Karen will be preaching.  We plan to have a potluck after worship at 10:30 a.m. We are excited to have all of our members (not just the 10 lucky CtKers who have been there) be able to meet with them and learn more about the ministry there and how we can continue to deepen our relationship.

Please make every effort to be present with us and we thank you for your ongoing support and prayers for our mission partner.

July 2022 — Social Ministry News

CtK’s Noisy Offering partner for July is Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, or RTLC. Nestled in Hillside, CO, the site, originally a summer resort destination, was purchased in 1957 by United Lutheran Church – Rocky Mountain Synod and the West Central Augustana Synod. It was renamed Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, offering Christ-centered hospitality and education to the first campers who arrived in the summer of 1958 to the campers arriving there this summer and, thanks to your generosity, to campers in the future.

Check out this awesome fly-over video: https://youtu.be/0Yuj2aJMXy8

You can see it’s truly an amazing place. There are opportunities for EVERYONE at Rainbow Trail:

Camp Grandparent: https://www.rainbowtrail.org/about/employment-and-volunteering/camp-grandparents/

Compass Points Adventure Experiences: https://www.rainbowtrail.org/compass-points/

Bridging Borders Service Projects: https://www.rainbowtrail.org/bridging-borders/

Retreats for Women, Men, Families, High Schoolers, Seasonal, or design your own: https://www.rainbowtrail.org/retreats/

Special Events: https://www.rainbowtrail.org/special-events/

Summer Camps:  https://www.rainbowtrail.org/summer-camps/

Our  littlest Lutherans (or Episcopalians, Methodists, Catholics, Non-Denoms, unchurched, all are welcome) don’t have to travel 5 hours to get a taste of what Rainbow Trail has to offer, because in addition to on-site camps, Rainbow Trail comes to Durango the second week of July every year to offer Day Camp to the Durango Community. Check out the July Faith Formation post for more info on this year’s Day Camp at CtK.

Our next Social Ministry Team Meeting will be on Tuesday, July 5th @ 10:00am in the Community Hall.
