Habitat for Humanity Thanks YOU!

A big THANK YOU to Larry Rardin, Pete Olson, and John Condie for volunteering for CtK’s Habitat Build in June.  It was a nice, sunny, and hot day, and the three men did indeed do framing.  They joined 9 other volunteers from AmeriCorps in putting up the fire wall between the two units of the duplex.  And as a change of pace, Habitat provided lunch for us!  Thanks, guys.

Habitat for Humanity–Last chance to sign up!

This Saturday, June 5, CtK volunteers will be working on the Habitat Home located at 823 Burnham Lane, Fox Farms, in Bayfield.  If you would like to come join us, please call Rap Fairley, 410-474-3571, to sign up .  Hopefully we will either be framing or putting up exterior siding.  Work starts at 8:30 am and should end around 3:30 pm.  The usual requirements still apply:  wear sensible clothing, closed toe shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen and whatever tools you want.  But  LABEL your tools!  Everyone participating needs to sign a waiver which will be available on site.  Volunteers will be contacted the week of the build with additional information.

COVID modifications:  We will be working with people from Americorp; everyone on site will be vaccinated.  If you are uncomfortable with this, please bring a mask.  At this time, Habitat is not providing on site water nor is CtK providing lunch…maybe next year.  Volunteers should bring their own water and lunch.

If you have questions, please call Rap Fairley at 410-474-3571.

Habitat for Humanity Update

There is lots going on at Habitat right now, notably getting ready for the 2021 build.  That build will be another duplex, 2 stories with 3…possibly 4…bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.  The site is back at Fox Farms in Bayfield, and the Save the Date for CtK’s build is Saturday, June 5.  (Please NOTE: we are back to SATURDAYS.)  Habitat will break ground after they receive the bids for the infrastructure and have chosen a contractor.  It should be sometime soon.

Usually, Americore comes at the beginning of a build to do the framing.  That is not happening this year; so, Habitat really needs volunteers to help with that aspect of the project.  In addition to the new build, Habitat has bought back some of their earlier homes.  (Their owners have prospered and moved on to bigger homes elsewhere – success stories!)  In the meantime, Habitat is renovating these homes and will resell them to new partners.  Volunteers from The Hammers Club, many of whom are retirees, help with the renovations as well as the new build.  If you would like to join them, please call Tami Joslin at 970-382-2215.

Additional details for CtK’s Habitat Build, signup, and restrictions will be announced as they become available as well as being published in the next Scribe.  If you have questions, please call Rap Fairley at 410-474-3571.

ELCA World Hunger Lenten Challenge–March Update

As I am confident you remember from last month, the Social Ministry Committee set a goal of $5000 to donate to ELCA World Hunger.  So far, the church has responded amazingly.  As of the middle of March, we had raised $3990!  With a little Easter push, we should easily meet our goal.

If you wonder what ELCA World Hunger does with our money, visit https://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Relief-and-Development/ELCA-World-Hunger for descriptions of their domestic and international approaches to addressing hunger issues.  If you wonder why the church feels this is necessary work, look in last month’s Scribe for statistics cribbed from the ELCS World Hunger website.

As you attend church this Easter, reflect on all the blessings God has bestowed on you and share some of those blessings with the world’s less fortunate.

Thank you for your awesome generosity.

ELCA World Hunger Lenten Challenge:

This year, as we have for 10 years, no, 15, well many years, we are raising money for ELCA World Hunger during the Lenten Season.  We have set a goal of $5,000 for our congregation; it is a goal we met easily last year despite the many socio-economic setbacks of the pandemic.

Here are some facts listed on the ELCA World Hunger Website.  These facts and statistics underscore the urgent need for us to reach out and help those in our world who are food insecure.

More than 820 million people – that’s about 11 percent of people in our world today – are hungry. As members of the ELCA, we are called to respond…ELCA World Hunger is uniquely positioned to reach communities in need.  From health clinics to microloans, water wells to animal husbandry, community meals to advocacy, your gifts to ELCA World Hunger make it possible for the ELCA to respond, supporting sustainable solutions that get at the root causes of hunger and poverty.  Hunger facts:

  • 821 million people around the world – that’s more than 1 in 10 – can’t access the food they need to live active, healthy lives.
  • According to the most recent estimates, 736 million people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 per day. That’s 10% of the world’s population.
  • At some point in 2017 (the most recent year available), more than 40 million people in the United States were unsure where their next meal might come from.
  • 39.7 million Americans were living in poverty in 2017. For a family of four, this means their annual household income was below $25,094.

Please help us support this cause.  Download the 40 Days of Giving 2021: Lenten calendar at https://www.elca.org/Resources/ELCA-World-Hunger.  Thank You!

Habitat Update:

Habitat for Humanity will be building a 2-story duplex back in Fox Farms in Bayfield this summer.  Additional details will be announced as they become available.

In the meantime, Habitat is looking for volunteers to be on the Habitat Board, the Faith Relations Committee and to work at the Restore.  The Board meets once a month for 1 ½ hours.   Currently there are 6 members and Rachel, the Director, would like to have 10 – 12 members.  A background in real estate, fund raising, or people skills would be an extra bonus.  The Faith Relations Committee consists of members from community churches or religious organizations in the area and meets every other month and supports Habitat in its various projects.  Volunteers, who help run the Restore, display merchandise, make sales, pick up donations, and a wide range of other activities.  ALL volunteers are very much appreciated!  Habitat does make a difference in people’s lives; there are lots of success stories and you can be a part of it.  Call Rachel at Habitat to volunteer at 970-382-2215.
