Telling Time

Telling Time

Easter this year falls on April 21st, which is almost as late as it can be. The date of Easter was set by the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE, and it was tied to the lunar calendar. It was determined that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (March 21st). That means that the date of Easter Sunday can range anywhere from March 22nd to April 25th. The last time it fell on March 22nd was 1818, and it won’t happen that early again until 2285. The last time it fell on April 25th was 1943, and it won’t happen that late again until 2038.

Cool, huh?

Keeping track of time in the church is important. The seasons and festivals of the church year provides a rhythm for our lives together. And we mark those seasons with special worship services and celebrations in our church. And – maybe this is just me – but I feel all out of whack when I miss marking one of those celebrations. I feel like I’m off balance, or just plain missing out on something.

All of this is to say, during Holy Week we work hard to provide some extra-meaningful worship services that mark some special times in our Lord’s life. Mark these events on your calendars now, and be sure that you come. I promise it will make the Easter celebration that much more meaningful!

April 14th – On Palm Sunday, we ritualize Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. So, be sure you’re at worship at either 8:00am or 10:30am.

April 18th – On Maundy Thursday, we commemorate the institution of the Lord’s Supper and we follow Jesus’ example of humility and service by washing one another’s feet (if you want). Worship will begin at 6:00pm.

April 19th – On Good Friday, we read and remember the passion story in its entirety, and marvel at the length God has gone to show us love, mercy and salvation. Worship will begin at 6:00pm.

April 20th – On Easter Eve, we hear some of the greatest stories of the Old Testament which all testify to God’s consistent action of bringing life out of death; light out of darkness; hope out of despair. We begin this evening with a meaningful and delicious meal at 5:00pm, and the interactive, immersive worship service begins at 6:00pm. Please note that space is limited for this worship service. See Mandy’s article in this newsletter for more information on how to sign up.

April 21st – On the Day of Resurrection (a.k.a. Easter), we celebrate the Lord’s victory over death and the grave. Join me for a short 30-minute SONrise worship service at Greenmount Cemetery at 6:30am. Or come for some celebration services at Christ the King Lutheran Church at 8:00 or 10:30am. Easter Brunch will also be served in the Community Hall this day from 8:30am-10:30am.

I hope you’ll join us for these worship services this year. They’re going to be great.

Peace,

Pastor Tim

Some of Our Church’s Ministries

Some of Our Church’s Ministries

The world provides enough food for all, but more than 800 million people around the world face chronic hunger.  We believe in a God of abundance, so as a church, we live out our call in baptism to strive for a just world where all are fed.  ELCA World Hunger is our church’s ministry to end hunger and poverty.  We walk alongside our partners and companions in the US and more than 60 other countries.  Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger address hunger and poverty around the world with creative and courageous action.

This Lent, you are invited to join together with fellow supporters to study, reflect, and give during ELCA World Hunger’s 40 Days of Giving.  Experience how the grace of Christ moves us to engage in transformative works of love around the world as God calls us into the ministry of hope, liberation, and restoration for our world.

Give Today:  Mail — Make your check payable to “ELCA World Hunger” and write “40 Days of Giving” on the memo line.  Place your check in the offering plate or mail to:  ELCA, P. O. Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009.

Palms for Palm Sunday

The palms we will use on Palm Sunday (April 14th) are brought to you by Eco-Palms, a Lutheran World Relief partner.   Eco-Palms communities use harvesting methods that protect the land they so greatly depend on for their livelihood; methods which also aid substantially in the community’s investment in forest fire protection.  What’s more, their harvesting process provides jobs and income to growing communities instead of middlemen reaping the benefits.  See the story at:  https://lwr.org/story-hub/how-lutheran-congregations-helped-transform-business-palms

Habitat Update

SAVE THE DATE!!  The CtK Habitat Work Day will be Saturday, June 1st this year.  If all goes according to plan, we will be FRAMING per request.  Keep in mind, there was a lot of snow this winter—could be a late start.  Either way, thanks!  ~ Rap Fairley for CtK Habitat

RSVP now for Easter Eve Dinner and Immersive Worship

RSVP now for Easter Eve Dinner and Immersive Worship

The season of Lent and Holy Week in particular has become my favorite time of year. It is a time of reflection, of gratitude, and of awe for the love God has for us all.

It can also be a sad time. I usually weep on Maundy Thursday when the altar is stripped. I am physically and emotionally exhausted at the Good Friday worship service. I am then buoyed by the anticipation of the resurrection that Easter Eve brings… and then it’s Easter!!

My Easter is definitely more meaningful when I am able to participate fully in Lent and Holy Week. I hope you can find the time to reflect and worship as well – especially at the Easter Eve Dinner and Immersive Worship service on Saturday, April 20th.

Due to the nature of this event, the special and intentional dinner and the size of the rooms through which we travel, space this year is STRICTLY LIMITED to THIRTY (30) participants. Please, please, use the following link to RSVP: https://www.ctkdurango.org/easter-eve-rsvp/.

If you want to invite folks, that’s great, just use the form to RSVP for yourself plus up to four (4) others. A running count of how many spaces are available will be updated daily at the top of the form.

Thank you for keeping this event safe and sustainable by submitting your RSVP today! (Don’t worry… we have a plan if more than thirty of you want to come!)
